There are various items of equipment that will be needed for a Miniature Pinscher as well as the optional items that can be considered. You should buy the essential such as a crate, dog bed, collar, lead, and bowls before getting a dog, so that these are ready for the dog's arrival.

To Purchase a Dog Crate / Carrier, Safety Gate or Puppy Pens see our Merchandise Page

Equipment

Crate - To keep your dog safe when travelling, doubles up as a bed giving your dog a sense of security.

Blanket  - You'll need a couple of blankets for your dog's crate / bed, so that should an accident occur you can quickly change the soiled one for a clean one.  Instead of an ordinary blanket my minpins prefer a homemade sleeping bag, which allows them to burry themselves right at the bottom, sometimes all you can see is a tiny nose sticking out. I use a thick fleece material to make the sleeping bags which, are 17 inches wide by 29 inches long, which is just the right size to fit into a small dog crate.  I have yet to find anywhere that sells this type of bedding small enough for the Miniature Pinscher.

Coat - To keep your dog warm and dry whilst out walking, you could make a coat from the sleeve of an old jumper / coat.

Collar and Lead - Although a puppy should not be allowed out until its course of vaccinations are complete it is a good idea to get it used to a collar and lead whilst in the house.  Make sure you don't fasten any collar too tightly, check regularly to ensure it does not become tight as the puppy grows. It should be possible to slide several fingers under the collar when fastened. An identity tag should be fixed to the collar which can help should the dog become lost or involved in an accident.

Feeding Bowls - Your Miniature Pinscher will require two separate bowls for food and water, you can chose from ceramic, earthenware, glass or metal bowls.  Ceramic, earthenware and glass bowls can all become chipped and harbour germs, where as metal bowls don’t chip and are easy to clean.

Brush -  A soft brush or grooming mitt to remove loose hairs.

Nail Clippers - To clip the dog's claws to prevent them from overgrowing.

Towels - Needed to dry your dog after a bath, or after out walking on a rainy day.

Home Emergency First Aid Kit - See Safety First.

Toys

There are numerous dog toys on the market; toys designed for chewing can help divert a puppy's chewing tendencies away from your furniture or shoes. These toys also help to keep a dog's teeth clean so are useful throughout the dogs life.

Balls - Ensure you get the right size ball for your dog, too small a ball could be swallowed or get caught in the dog's throat.

Kongs - Have a more interesting bounce than a ball, completely safe, very durable and long-lasting. Kongs can be filled with food and given when you need to keep your dog busy for a few hours. If you do put food inside the Kong remember to reduce the amount of food given at meal times, so as not to over feed your dog.
